Curious what’s in St Albans? Whether you’ve never been or it’s your 100th time, there is always something new to learn about this city. With more than 1200 years under its belt, here are a few fun facts about St Albans England.
- Originally the Roman City of Verulamium, it was the first major town on the old Roman Road of Watling Street for travelers heading north, hence the city’s reference as the “London Gate”.
- Home to the only Roman open-air theatre with a stage in Britain.
- 1 of the 12 Eleanor Crosses was erected here by King Edward I on behalf of his wife, Queen Eleanor, in 1290. Her body was taken to Westminster in stages, and a cross erected in each of the 12 stopping places. Very few are still standing, including the most famous one in Charing Cross, which is how Charing Cross London got its name.
- For Big Bang Theory fans, Stephen Hawking studied at St Albans School.
- St Albans School is considered “Britain’s oldest public school”. It’s the oldest in Hertfordshire and one of the oldest in the world!
- It’s believed that Ann Boleyn took refuge at the Sopwell Nunnery after returning from France and is the location of her secret marriage to Henry VIII.

What To Do In St Albans For A Fun Day Out
There are many things to do in St Albans that include picturesque walks (for wisteria and lovely house seekers), ruin or nature walks (follow River Ver map), churches, markets, hitting the shops, or simply chill in one of many pubs.
1 – Visit St Albans Cathedral & Abbey Church
The St Albans Cathedral often referred to as “The Abbey” is the longest worshipping Christian church in the country. The cathedral, along with the city, is named after Alban, the first recorded British Christian martyr beheaded by the Roman Empire around 305AD for refusing to worship Roman idols over Christianity.
When Alban walked to his death, legends state that his requests were answered by water appearing to give him thirst, followed by the first Roman executioner’s head falling off and the second executioner’s eyes popping out after the final blow. Other legends say a well appeared where Alban’s head rolled upon execution, now at the bottom of Holywell Hill.
A few less bloody facts about St Albans Cathedral to make you want to visit:
- The Cathedral was built in 1077.
- It has the longest nave of any cathedral in England, at 85 meters long.
- An actual earthquake ruined the east end of the Abbey in 1250. Sections of the Abbey had to be knocked down and rebuilt in 1290.
- Princess Diana unveiled the rose stained window in 1989.

2 – See The Abbey Gateway
Not to be confused as an extension of the Cathedral, which I tend to want to naturally do, the Abbey Gateway on Abbey Mill Ln is the impressive building in front of the main entrance to the Cathedral.
The Abbey Gateway was built in 1365 and is the last remaining building of the Benedictine Monastery. It was used as a prison, housed the third printing press in England, and since 1871 been part of St Albans School.
3 – Have A Pint At Ye Olde Fighting Cocks
It’s the oldest pub in Britain!
Admittedly, I stumbled upon Ye Olde during my first visit to St Albans. I wanted to check out the UK city to move to, only to discover it offers so much more!
Ye Olde Fighting Cocks offers all the charisma of what you’d expect from the oldest pub in Britain: low ceilings, uneven floors, wooden beams, cool t-shirts, fab beer garden, and even its own news publication.

4 – Explore Verulamium Park
The best park in St Albans closest to the city center is Verulamium Park. It offers water views, Abbey views, recreational facilities for various sports (tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, golf or foot-golf at Abbey View Golf, track & field, exercise equipment area, kids’ playground, splash pad), a cafe, and is home to tons of wildlife and greenery space. On a nice British day, this St Albans park is a hot spot for a picnic or to spend the entire day.
Named after the Roman city of Verulamium on which it stands, the park covers over 100 acres of parkland. You can spend a leisure day in St Albans just covering all that Verulamium Park offers.

What To See And Do In Verulamium Park
- Roman wall ruins
- London Gate ruins that marks a set of the 4 corners of the Roman City.
- The Hypocaust – The hypocaust is an ancient roman historic location that features a preserved mosaic floor. Even if it’s closed, you can peer through the glass windows.
- Pop into the Inn At The Park for a cuppa, lunch or ice cream. They even offer a picnic takeaway.
- Grebe House – Walk through the Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust Garden. This is a nature thing to do in Verulamium Park with small children.
- In the summer, run through the splash pad (adults cool off, too!).
- You can also walk through the park’s various paths to go “off-road”. Bluebells adorn the pathways in late April, early May.
- River Ver Walk

You can follow the River Ver from one end of St Albans to the other. It’s a 17-mile walk so wear your best walking shoes! You can follow the River Ver path from New Barnes Mill all the way to the Roman Theatre. For something closer to the St Albans City Center, start near Westminster Lodge. This is where you can find a St Albans map of the River Ver walk, which is located at the bottom of Holywell Hill by the bridge. Then follow the river path through Verulamium Park choosing your points of interest along the way.

5 – Visit Verulamium Museum
The Verulamium Museum is home to large scale mosaics and many artifacts that represent everyday life in Roman Britain times. There is also a shop to buy Roman souvenirs and unique St Albans gifts.
6 – See The Roman Theatre
The Roman Theatre in St Albans is the only open-air theatre in Great Britain with a stage. You can imagine the different levels of the theatre, where the animals were stored, and how uncomfortable it might have been sitting on stones for hours to watch a production.
And it’s still in use! Every summer the theatre holds a production the entire month of July. Highly recommend it for a day out or as the perfect summer thing to do at night in St Albans.
Also located upon the Roman Theatre grounds are a wine shop and other points of excavation.

7 – Walk Gorhambury Drive To Gorhambury House
Gorhambury Drive is an easy country walk among the Gorhambury Estate and the Old Gorhambury House. The Gorhambury House is a Grade II listed Neo-Palladian style house undergoing refurbishment. Although it’s not possible to tour the house, various Gorhambury talks and activities are scheduled throughout the year.
Gorhambury Drive offers scenery of fields and animal life. Working sheep, horses and cows rotate through the fields throughout the year. Gorhambury Drive is a dirt road with only 1 steep hill, so it’s a great place to extend a walk or a bicycle ride through Verulamium Park. The drive is open during certain hours to the public so be sure to plan your visit in advance.
From Bluehouse Hill, the walk to Gorhambury House is approximately 3 miles round trip.

8 – Walk To Francis Bacon’s Home (Ruins)
Probably more commonly referred to as the Old Gorhambury House, Francis Bacon’s Home is another historical site on the Gorhambury Estate.
The story has it that when Queen Elizabeth I visited Sir Francis Bacon’s house in 1572 she referred to it as “small”. As that didn’t go over so well with Mr Bacon, he commissioned an extension to the house in 1577 for her second visit. You’ll have to visit and see for yourself! Too small?
From Bluehouse Hill, the walk to the Old Gorhambury House is approximately 4 miles round trip.
9 – Visit St Michael’s Village
St Michael’s Village is the section of buildings and property that extends from the top of St Michael’s church past Kingsbury Manor. This charming part of St Albans is one of the prettiest neighborhoods and despite how compact it is, it’s loaded with must things to see and do.
Starting from the top of the street by Verulamium Park to the bottom, St Michael’s Village in St Albans is known for:
St Michael’s Church
St Michael’s church is one of 3 St Albans churches founded during the 10th century to serve pilgrims who traveled to give respect to Alban’s shrine (located in the Cathedral). The other 2 St Albans churches that helped facilitate the pilgrimage are St Peter’s and St Stephen’s.

The 6 Bells Pub
The 6 Bells Pub is nearly as old as Ye Olde and loaded with old English charm. Often overheard from others,
“Now this is an old English pub. The way it should be”.
Stop for a drink in their beer garden or book dinner. Just plan your visit in advance as this pub is always packed. Bring your pooch, too!
St Albans Waffle House
A visit to St Albans isn’t complete without a stop at the St Albans Waffle House. This popular brunch spot is located in a 16th-century watermill overlooking River Ver. Possibly recommended the most for where to eat in St Albans, the Waffle House really does serve all things on waffles. Don’t show up looking for a coronation chicken salad…unless you want it served on a waffle!
Sidenote for Americans: The St Albans Waffle House is not to be confused or thought of in the same vein as the popular Waffle House diner in the States. They couldn’t be more drastically different!
Queues for a seat wrap around the front garden and sometimes to the bridge on a busy morning. The Waffle House in St Albans is THAT good. And it’s the only 1 of 2 in the UK; Norwich has the other one.
Hertfordshire Puddingstone
Look for a giant rock in front of the Kingsbury watermill before entering the Waffle House parking lot.
The puddingstone is a conglomerate of sedimentary rock composed of rounded flint pebbles cemented together by younger quartz formations. It looks like a block of concrete but when sliced open it appears like plums in a pudding, hence how it got its name.
Puddingstones are confined primarily to Hertfordshire, this one in St Michael’s is the most notable in size. In folklore, a puddingstone is considered to have supernatural powers, including a charm against witchcraft. Or in more current times, to offer a bride and groom fertility!

10 – Walk Fishpool Street
Fishpool Street could be considered part of St Michael’s Village or an extension of George Street. Regardless, I find it to be the prettiest street to walk to Verulamium Park and to the city center. It’s one of those streets you simply never tire of – no matter how many times you’ve walked it!
Whether you consider walking Fishpool from the bottom or the top, be sure Fishpool Street makes your list of top things to do in St Albans. Look out for:
Stunning Cottages & Winding Streets
If you love looking at varying architecture, doors, door knockers, and everything in between, put Fishpool on your list. This part of St Albans is known as the “rags to riches” street and there’s a tour all about it!
Just be sure to look down to note the edge of the curb. The lower parts of Fishpool sidewalks are above the cars parked alongside the curb. Fishpool is definitely a beautiful street with so much character but beware to walk tipsy in the night!
St Michael’s Manor Hotel
You don’t have to be an overnight guest to pop into the hotel and see what the fuss is all about. Pop in for a G&T in their swank bar or snag the couches by the river while the kids run around outside. It’s a great place for a beverage break after walking St Albans for a day.
Fishpool Street
11 – Stroll Stunning St Albans Streets
Between beautiful vines growing symmetrically to one pretty cottage after another, there is something to see on these streets for anyone that just wants to look at lovely things.
In addition to St Michael’s Street and Fishpool Street, St Albans has some of the most picturesque streets to simply not miss. There are many lovely streets in St Albans that it’s hard to keep it to only 5.
For wandering beautiful streets that are easy access from the city center, here are my top 3:
George Street
Located minutes from the Clock Tower, the compact George Street is home to Dylan’s pub, restaurants, the cutest little alley, and some of the best shops in St Albans – sorta like St Albans’ own Savile Row.
New England Street
Perhaps a little biased since my roots are from New England, but this tiny street feels more like Notting Hill. Hands down my favorite colorful street and host to the most perfectly manicured wisteria in St Albans. This street is a must in late April or May for #wisteriahysteria.

Lower Dagnall, Queen Street, Spicer Loop – You can spend 30 minutes just in this quadrant of streets.
Sopwell Lane
There’s something about Sopwell Lane that’s simply hard to not fall in love with. In addition to the pub after pub after pub that makes a St Albans pub crawl hard to ignore, the pretty cottages vary so differently side by side and the Cathedral can be seen overhead.

12 – Visit St Peter’s Churchyard
This St Albans church as mentioned with St Michael’s Church is one of the gateway churches that served those who traveled to give respect to Alban’s shrine.
In addition to its historical notoriety, St Peter’s church is also home to a bit of pop culture. It was used as the filming location for Ricky and Bianca’s second wedding in the BBC’s EastEnders. Pop culture aside, my favorite thing to do at St Peter’s is to visit the Garden Of Hope.

The Garden Of Hope is part of St Peter’s churchyard that holds a spiritual presence and memory of life. As you quietly reflect on a life gone, the gardens are meant to whisper and speak to you in a way to promise a life renewed. It’s an incredibly peaceful place to visit St Albans when you need that moment or encouragement of hope. As you leave there is a peaceful prayer:

13 – Night At The St Albans Museum + Gallery
Beautifully restored in 2018, the St Albans Museum + Gallery is located in the heart of the City Center. It’s free to enter although some events charge a fee. The 3 must things to see in the St Albans Museum: Courtroom, Cellar, and Assembly Room.

14 – Climb The The Clock Tower
For the best views of St Albans, climb to the top of the Clock Tower. It only costs £1 for adults and kids climb for free. It’s incredibly narrow but you can leave your bag with the sweet attendants. The Clock Tower is also a fab place to buy St Albans art. You can purchase a black and white vintage St Albans Clock Tower print for £1.

15 – Picnic At Sopwell Nunnery
Located along the River Ver, the Sopwell Nunnery is what’s left from Sir Richard Lee’s house. The house was gifted to Richard Lee, from Henry VIII in 1540. The most fascinating part of this former Tudor mansion is that it’s possibly the location of where Ann Boleyn took refuge after leaving France and where her secret marriage to Henry VIII took place.
Ann Boleyn theory aside, the Sopwell Ruins is a popular spot for picnicking along the River Ver and is only a few minutes from Sopwell Lane or Westminster Lodge.

16 – What To See In St Albans City Center
For cool buildings, photos, and points of interest to see, be sure not to miss:
The Corn Exchange Building
It’s where Reiss is located now but check out the unusual creamy yellow-white bricks. The Corn Exchange building was built in 1854 as part of an architectural competition.

Formerly home to the Jack Wills store and now Anthropologie, this building is just cool to look at. Notice the slope of the 2nd floor!

Venus & Adonis Mural at Pots Of Art
It might seem weird to go to the Pots of Art to just check out a mural, but it’s ok! If you don’t want to test your skills in painting pottery, the art shop loves to show off its prized Venus & Adonis mural.
The Boot
In addition to being one of the more festive pubs in town, it’s also home to the only red iconic phone booth box in St Albans.

The mural was painted in honor of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. It’s a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on her coronation day, a tribute to her 70 years by local St Albans artist Ant Steel. The mural can be found in Christopher Place.

Probably one of the cutest streets in St Albans. This French section of St Albans offers several great photo opportunities, to include a shortcut to Christopher’s Place. Pay special attention to the change in beams as you enter the shortcut and the goat.

17 – St Albans Guided Walking Tours
For historical detail on the history of St Albans, including ghosts, join one of many St Albans walking tours. A guided walking tour is a fun thing to do on a first-time visit and there are many options to select from.
18 – St Albans Markets
One of the most popular things to do in St Albans is shop one of their many markets! The market stalls are set up between the top of St Peter’s Street all the way down to Market Place.
Farmers Market
Held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Market stalls cover nearly every industry: vegetables, clothes, handbags, toys, candles, fishmonger, custom framing, phone accessories, fabric, flowers, food stalls, and more.
Food Market
The St Albans Food Market runs on the 2nd Sunday of every month. Find meats, fish, cheese, oils, chocolate, and organic stalls.
Antique & Vintage Market
My favorite St Albans Market! Typically scheduled for the 3rd Sunday of every month, the antique and vintage market is host to all sorts of interesting items. Find vintage furniture, clothes, antique dolls, books, tins, posters, jewelry, maps, and a lot more rare items.

19 – Where To Eat In St Albans
You shouldn’t leave without eating a waffle, pudding, or burger. St Albans has so many fab places to eat, you’ll want to spend a day just on a foodie tour.

Trains To St Albans
There are around 747 trains that go travel from London to St Albans City every day. The average train ride from London to St Albans City Station is 36 minutes, while the fastest train is only 17. I’ll take that one please!

St Albans Abbey Station is another option. It serves as the terminus station for trains traveling along the Abbey Line. It’s a slower option, but might be a more convenient choice for Watford Junction travelers.

I typically wouldn’t suggest going to see a movie when there’s so much to see outside, but the St Albans Odyssey is quite swank. It’s a restored art deco building that originally opened in 1908 and been through several iterations since, to include a fire in 1927. You can enjoy a new film release or an old classic while nibbling on a cheese board and sipping prosecco. Book tickets to the cinema for your weekend.
