Beach In A Jar
Collecting seashells and sand is the perfect activity for a child at the beach, and it makes it that more special for them when they know they are collecting items with a purpose.
When my daughter and I were thinking about what to do for my mom’s birthday, who’s recovering from a stem cell transplant to treat multiple myeloma cancer, we were at a loss with what to do. But when my daughter reminded me that it was Meme who taught her how to look for the perfect seashells, a beach jar made perfect sense. Mom loves the beach and to travel, but neither are in her wheelhouse now. That’s why this easy kid craft gift idea for someone that loves the beach but can’t go is so fitting.
And if your child seeks independence, this is one craft they can create on their own with minimal supervision. It truly becomes a special gift made entirely by them.
Supplies:
1. Mason jar with chalkboard label, or purchase label separately

2. Chalkboard pen
A regular piece of chalk is hard to use and doesn’t offer smooth writing. A chalkboard pen offers a nicer finish and is easier for your little ones to hold. And if they mess up, they can wipe away and do it again. Wilko sells blue and white chalk options.
3. Hairspray
To make the chalk writing permanent, spray it with aerosol hairspray from 10 inches away. Though I was keen on designing and printing a label, that became less affordable and more my project than my child’s. Besides, this way the age of the child is reflected in the craft, which is far sweeter.
4. Seashells and sand
Your special person might not be able to join you at the beach, but you can join the beach to them. Collect shells and sand from all the places you visit and make it an annual gift for that person in your life that loves the beach. Make them feel part of your journey despite the distance or reasons that make it impossible to be together. Craft with purpose.
