With the exception of tips from expat friends, I didn’t have an outline of what we needed to move our family from the USA to the UK in warp speed. Even despite my relocation experience, moving abroad stretched my knowledge. I had no idea how much harder it would be to move to another country until I was in the thick of it.
I created this guide after finally arriving in England, in disbelief we had pulled it off. My family had overcome several major hurdles to move to the UK from the USA leaving me feeling heroic and relieved that the hardest part was over.
My family’s own journey moving from the USA to the UK involved renting our house, closing on another house, dealing with a car accident, absorbing life-changing news about my mom, and weathering Hurricane Harvey. With the exception of the first, the others had nothing to do with moving abroad but influenced our schedule and stress immensely.
Our list of moving to-dos was absurd and complicated. We brainstormed every morning the different steps for the day that had to be done, who would do it, and then forecast out the rest of the week.
But through all the chaos, stress, and mistakes we made along the way, we got through moving overseas by documenting every step of the way.
