I can finally function again after three lousy days of feeling like rubbish. I did try to get into a doctor but I suppose if you haven’t planned your illness in advance, it’s a luck of the draw to get a same day appointment.
The doctors office releases same day appointments at 8am, which is conveniently during the school run. It’s a crime to talk on the phone or even touch your phone while driving in the UK, so by the time I got the kids off to school and in their classrooms (you can’t use phones on campus either), it was 8:30 when I finally rang the doctor’s office.
“Try again tomorrow”, she said.
Well, at least the illness turned into a basic cold and I didn’t waste time and money going to the doctor. And don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining about the fact you can’t drive or text while driving. In fact, that’s one of things I prefer about the UK over living in Texas.
In Texas I’m certain no one has both hands on the wheels or eyes on the road. As a matter of fact, it’s the only state that I’ve lived where I’ve been involved in traffic accidents. And not just 1 but 2! Traffic accidents are frequent and causing insurance premiums to skyrocket. I’m confident it’s a result of the lackadaisical phone use laws while driving.
Despite driving on the opposite side and roads being as narrow as a London alleyway, the UK has done right by its people with enforcing a hands free policy while driving. It does make figuring out how to get around quite problematic with cars without satellite navigation. I’d rather use Google Maps anyhow, since it’s simple and seems far more accurate than any sat nav I’ve used. But you do need a gadget to hold your phone in a position where you can see it while not being tempted to touch it.
The Solution
Thankfully the hubs found this really great magnetic car phone holder. I made fun of him at first since he buys lots of funky car gadgets, but this one is actually worth it. They are fairly cheap and can be found here:
