Mostly known for its Cathedral and Durham Castle, Durham is simply one of those cities that exceed beyond expectations. With a river runneth through and quaint streets to delight all the senses, here are the 8 top things to do in Durham UK for a day.
All of these places are within walking distance, and not too hilly, making it the perfect city for easy exploring of all abilities for 1 day in Durham.
8 Must Things To Do In Durham UK
Between being home to the most beautiful building in England (per British voters) and also one of Britain’s 8 most beautiful cities in the country per National Geographic, simply walking the city might be enough. But if you’re looking for the best of what to see in Durham for a day, try these 8.
1 – Fill Up At Flat White Kitchen
The first thing to do for a day in DurhamThis adorable cafe is conveniently on your way to Durham Castle or Cathedral. As though the narrow cobblestone streets aren’t enough to excite you. This popular coffee and food spot will not only draw you in but completely transport you to Notting Hill. You’ll seriously wonder where you are as you make your way to the back.
With all its charm and an amazing menu, you might forego everything else and want to stay here all day.
Flat White Kitchen is one of my favorite places in Durham – the road it’s on, the building presence, and everything about it made me feel like I had found the perfect spot. It’s the perfect spot to kick-off your day in Durham.

A visit to Flat White Kitchen feels like Notting Hill
2 – Durham Castle
Only open for tours at certain times of year to allow for Durham University students to study and have some sense of privacy, Durham Castle is well worth the wait. The tour reveals the history of how Durham Castle came to be, along with highlights of student culture and how it operates today. Certain times of the year offer overnight stays at the Castle when the University breaks for the summer.
See where some students have the honor of calling home, where they eat and what life is like living in this nearly 1000-year-old castle.
3 – Durham Cathedral
Just beside Durham Castle resides Durham Cathedral, voted Britain’s favorite building in 2001 making it an obvious choice as one of the top things to do in Durham.
The Cathedral’s nave is believed to be the world’s first structural pointed arch. In addition to the arch, the Cathedral draws in visitors annually to view its Romanesque architecture, Open Treasure, and more magically, the filming locations used for Harry Potter.
For any Harry Potter fan, this is what to see in Durham!
- Take a peek through the stained glass at the Chapter House which served as the location for Hogwarts’ Transfiguration class (entry was not allowed at the time of this post).
- Stroll Hogwarts “Quad” and courtyard as Harry, Hermione, and Ron did in the first two Harry Potter films.
- Get all the Harry Potter film scenes at Durham Cathedral.
4 – Walk Along The River Wear
One of the best things to do in Durham England is walking beyond the medieval streets and along one of many stunning riverside views.
From the Cathedral or Castle choose a footpath to walk along the River Wear. Pick up a free Durham City Map in the town square which highlights the various walking paths.
A couple of convenient options after visiting Durham Castle and Cathedral:
Option 1: For river views of the Castle and Cathedral in Durham
Cross Prebends Bridge to enjoy a walk west of the riverbank heading in the direction of town ending up at Revolution for lunch. This is the best walk for full views of the Castle and Cathedral.
Crossover one of two bridges (Framwellgate Bridge or Milburngate Bridge) to do a full circle around the town center.
Option 2: For nature views and discovering other gems along the river in Durham
Head south for an easterly walk around the point along the river.
From Durham Cathedral follow the path south on the east side of the riverbank all the way around, walking under Prebends Bridge, Kingsgate Bridge, and then Elvet Bridge to arrive at Prince Bishops River Cruises.
Take a cruise, head into the town center or stop here for lunch…
5 – Lunch At The Boat Club
A local recommendation, The Boat Club offers the perfect outdoor patio and deck for lounging the afternoon away. The menu, service, and scenery offer a perfect lunch destination after a morning of touring Durham.
If the weather prevents dining outside, the main floor inside is nautically decorated for boating enthusiasts, while the bar upstairs offers a glass ceiling with hanging wisteria to offer a second-best outdoor dining alternative. And don’t miss out on the disco ball!
The Boat Club is another perfect example of Durham’s charming surprises and one of my favorite things to do in Durham UK.
6 – Find Happiness On #Umbrella Street
After touring the most popular Durham destinations, hit the high street. Explore cobblestone side streets and tempting passageways which are seemingly everywhere.
High on the list of what to see in Durham during summer months is #UmbrellaStreet. Be sure to go to Prince Bishops Shopping Centre to witness the rainbow of colors overhead. #UmbrellaStreet is a summer installation meant to inspire and brighten up cloudy British days.
Cloudy or not, you’re certain to feel good after a walk through High Street Durham.
7 – Visit The Town Hall
Admittedly seen from only the outside, Durham Town Hall offers audio guides, interactive points, and even short documentaries on people of Durham that played a unique role in Durham’s heritage. The building itself is Grade II listed and pictures convey a similar medieval architecture as seen throughout the town.
Centered in the heart of the city for more than six centuries, Durham Town Hall can’t be missed.
Entrance to The Town Hall is free but only open on Saturdays from 10 to 3.
8 – Shop Durham Market Hall
Located in the city center just beside the Town Hall, resides Durham Market Hall. Shopping Durham Market Hall is one of the main things to do in Durhan England. As you approach one of the market entrances you might reconsider due to some revolting smells, but carry on. You don’t want to miss this!
The Durham Market Hall is home to more than 40 independent businesses. And although you’re short visit to Durham unlikely involves shopping for produce or fish, there are many stalls to find the perfect Durham keepsake.
And lastly, if you can’t make it to one of Durham’s distilleries then be sure to visit the Market Hall Wines stall. Let the owner know you’re interested in taste testing gin and he’ll be more than happy to pour you some of Durham’s finest.
Where To Stay In Durham
If you’re lucky enough to spend the night in Durham, Kings Lodge Hotel is the perfect spot nestled within a cute garden offering it privacy and just a short walk from the town center.
While some rooms can accommodate a family of four, it’s the pub restaurant and service that make it extra special. Enjoy breakfast included and nestle in the back room, or opt for outside at one of the bistro tables.
And be sure to order the pub’s sticky toffee pudding. You’ll be forever converted if you weren’t prior to this stay.
