Though not nearly as celebrated as in the USA, the UK has something unique to offer on Halloween that the USA doesn’t: castles.
Although Halloween is growing in popularity year over year in England, it still takes walking a few British streets or even knowing where to find an American populated one before finding a house that enjoys the season as much as Americans do.
So what do you do on Halloween in England if it’s a favorite time of year and you’re really missing your old neighborhood Halloween trail? Visit a haunted UK castle of course.
Just because you aren’t in America doesn’t mean you can’t have an epic Halloween in Britain, right?
Trick-or-treating might have lost its luster in the UK with fewer houses to visit, and neighbors might gawk at your overly decorated house, so opt for touring one of these 10 UK castles on Halloween instead. You’ll have a gruesome time.

10 UK Castles To Visit On Halloween
Personally scrubbed and officially on the UK bucket list, here are the best castles to visit on Halloween in England for October half term with kids.
1 – Framlingham Castle
Located on the Suffolk coast, Framlingham Castle is said to be the inspiration behind Ed Sheeran’s ‘Castle On The Hill’ hit. Aside from checking out what so many others want to see behind the song’s motivation, the castle offers Halloween creepy critters and craft events. Halloween costume competition included.
Orford Castle is just 15 miles away if you want to knock off two on the same day!
2 – Sudeley Castle
Located in the Cotswolds, Sudeley Castle offers the perfect backdrop and children events for Halloween. We spent nearly 5 hours exploring Sudeley Castle with the kids. Between the trail map, spooky arts and crafts, and a massive playground, the whole family will enjoy this very family-oriented Halloween destination. A great cafe is on-site at the castle to enjoy lunch or you can bring your own.

3 – Leeds Castle
Located not in Leeds (so strange!) but 1.5 hours southeast of London, this castle offers a monster bash costume party for small children. Similar to Sudeley Castle, there is a Halloween trail. Children are rewarded with stamps as they complete each class. The Monster Mash Ball gives the chance for children to dress up and win prizes. No extra cost to attend.

4 – Alnwick Castle
Located on the Northumberland Coast, Alnwick Castle is the destination for Harry Potter fans. The Philosopher’s Stone was filmed here and many other recognizable scenes, such as learning to fly, Quidditch, the Weasley car crash scene, and the Lion Arch for exiting Hogwarts to get to Hagrid’s or the Forbidden Forest.
In addition to a broomstick flying lesson or a dragon quest at Alnwick Castle, they offer different Halloween activities during October half term.

5 – Dover Castle
Located 2 hours east of London, Dover Castle is considered the “Key to England” due to its defensive history. It’s also the largest castle in England. Combine a day at Dover Castle climbing the Great Tower and partaking in a Halloween costume competition, then drive out to the White Cliffs of Dover where the view and history will certainly leave you breathless.
If the haunted castle and views are not enough, partake in an adult-only Halloween murder mystery dinner.

6 – Whitby Abbey
Though not technically a castle, how can one ignore Whitby Abbey’s inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’? Though there are no scheduled events for Halloween at Whitby Abbey, I’m not sure what would be more spooky than a visit to this site on Halloween night.
Combine a Halloween weekend getaway with Alnwick Castle, a stay in Durham, and then a visit to Whitby Abbey for the perfect gothic panoramic photo. Epic Halloween indeed!

7 – Lancaster Castle
Located 2 hours west of Leeds, Lancaster Castle has been a destination for the active-minded family. The castle is known to host a jailbreak 10K and a fancy dress fun run for the children (goody bag included) and it’s back on for October 2022. But if a run on Halloween doesn’t suit you, you can still get your fill of scariness with one of their ghostly tours.
For kids and adults willing to be frightened, Lancaster Castle offers evening castle tours. The later hour slots are for adults only.
8 – Oxford Castle & Prison
Located in Oxford, Oxford Castle has a unique Halloween event for the trick-or-treater willing to venture into potion-making.
Tweens and teens can go on spooky evening tours. Oxford Castle & Prison historically offers different haunted events just for Halloween every year. Just book well in advance to guarantee a spot before these events are sold out!

9 – Warwick Castle
My personal favorite!
Located 20 minutes northeast of Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwick Castle has a jam-packed daily agenda for Halloween that accommodates all ages. From those that just want to enjoy the birds of prey to those that want to tackle fear head-on, Warwick Castle simply has a lot going on.

10 – Chillingham Castle
Located on the Northumberland Coast, Chillingham Castle is considered Britain’s most haunted historic castle. Though suitable for a family day out, this UK castle offers serious bone-chilling events that don’t require Halloween to experience. The castle offers year-round guided ghost tours, which need to be booked far in advance.
In addition to ghost tours, admission allows you to visit the Castle State Rooms, Dungeons, and Torture Chamber. It’s best to plan a Chillingham Castle visit for adults only!

Final Tips For Castles To Visit On Halloween
Unlike the USA, October 31st isn’t the day for all festivities to take place. For all 10 castles to visit on Halloween, most events run the week prior to Halloween during the UK school’s October half term. A few such as Warwick Castle and Oxford Castle & Prison offer events on Halloween itself but plan ahead to avoid disappointment.
So, if finding lit pumpkins and Halloween decorations is taking the fun out of this very American tradition, then change things up. Enjoy the spirit of Halloween castle style in the UK. Plan one or more of these 10 castles to visit on Halloween in England and experience the true magic of the spooktacular occasion. 🎃👻💀
p.s. In the UK, kids only knock on houses to trick-or-treat if there is a pumpkin lit on the doorstep.
